How we produce our chaff.....round bales are loaded onto a magazine that automatically takes it into the mill. Here the string net is manually cut off the bale & the hay is manually forked off by hand into the steam box elevator.
The next process is manually feeding the hay through the chaff cutter blades that sit on a rotating wheel. The now cut hay (chaff) passes though many different sized sieves literally sorting the chaff from the hay!
Large pieces are augered back to the cutter blades for re cutting and the hay 'fines' as we call it, meaning the dust is also collected and on sold for making animal pellets.
Into the bagging chute the chaff goes filling to a weighted 28kg bag when packed. Another manual job of removing the full bags & then hand sewing each bag with an automatic sewing machine.
Now they are placed onto another smaller elevator for manually packing into our bag press.
The press enables us to place up to 22 bags onto a pallet, the chaff is then compacted by hydraulics to a much smaller size for freight purposes.
Finally a machine steps in and a forklift takes away the packed chaff ready for distribution!
So a simple bag of chaff really isn't so simple!!
